Reducing Stress During A Divorce

January 23, 2018 | By Leslie B. Spoltore

There is no doubt that divorce litigation can be a stressful process.  While there will be factors and forces outside of your control, there are things you can control and steps you can take to reduce your stress level.  Below are five examples of steps you can take to reduce the stress of litigation:

  1. Choose Your Lawyer Carefully

A divorce is unlike any other type of legal case because it is so personal.  You and your legal team will discuss a variety of topics related to your family, your finances and your future.  If you want to be represented, you should choose a lawyer best suited to help you.  Just because your best friend’s sister’s boss said you should use someone doesn’t make it the best fit for you.  Make sure your lawyer is someone you can work with, talk with and listen to.

  1. Assemble A Team Of Advisors (If Necessary)

Depending on the nature of your marital estate you may need the assistance of other professionals.  For example, you may need a business valuator, a financial planner or a tax advisor.  With the assistance of your lawyer, assemble a qualified team that can work well together and that will work for you.

  1. Let Your Professionals Do Their Jobs

Congratulations!  You have hired professionals to represent you – work with your team.  Talk to them and listen to them.  Working with (rather than against) your team can help to reduce expenses and stress.

  1. Be Informed

Not knowing what the future holds can be stressful. You have hired professionals to help you navigate the process so take advantage of their knowledge.  Read the letters and documents your team sends you – every word.  Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you do not understand something.  Being informed will help you to be more confident in the decisions you will be required to make during the divorce process.

  1. Decide What Really Matters To You

Property division cases are about dividing a marital estate.  Determine what assets and/or legal arguments are important to you and for you.  Don’t spend time, money and energy fighting over things that don’t matter to you.
